Needy moms can get help for infants
Lubbock has high rates of pre-term birth, infant mortality and babies in the neonatal intensive care unit, said Dr. Linda Brice, assistant professor in the Texas Tech School of Nursing. Brice said the average woman seeks prenatal care between 18 and 21 weeks, while the average teen seeks prenatal care at "about 28 weeks to never."

In an effort to encourage pregnant women to seek prenatal care early and prevent such problems, Texas Tech nursing students will host the seventh annual Stork's Nest Baby Shower from 1 to 3 p.m. Thursday at the International Cultural Center, 601 Indiana Ave.
Monetary donations and new baby items are now being accepted and will be accepted during the shower. To make a donation, call 743-2730, ext. 239 or 241-3652. Donations are tax deductible, and nothing is too small for donation, Brice said.
The Stork's Nest is a national cooperative between the March of Dimes and Zeta Phi Beta sorority, which allows pregnant women to earn points for prenatal appointments, taking childbirth classes and signing up for Medicaid and WIC, if eligible. Once the baby is born, the mother earns points for taking her child to well baby appointments and for receiving immunizations. The points can be redeemed for new baby items, such as strollers, diapers, infant car seats or breast pumps.
Each year, the Stork's Nest assists between 800 and 1,200 women and teens, Brice said. In the past seven years she has been involved with the baby shower, Brice said she has run into mothers who went through the Stork's Nest program who tell her the program helped them realize how important prenatal care is.
"We're ultimately trying to have a nice, healthy, term baby," Brice said. "And once the baby is born, to have immunizations and checkups."
Last year, the baby shower, which is open to the public, raised more than $45,500 in baby items and monetary donations. Brice said she hopes to raise at least that amount this year, but will be thrilled with anything received.
"We appreciate everybody who opens up their heart and donates," Brice said.
The event not only helps pregnant women get early and regular prenatal care, but it also helps nursing students get involved in their community, Brice said.
Brice said she recommends people get to the baby shower at 12:30 p.m. to get food, mingle and see what items will be raffled. An auction, for which Brice will play auctioneer, featuring items such as a football signed by Mike Leach, will start at 1 p.m.
